Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop donates $35,000 to Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Fayette Hospital

L-R: Diane Bartels- Clothes Less Traveled board of directors,
Vicky Turner-Piedmont Fayette Hospital board of directors,
Janet McGregor Dunn- Clothes Less Traveled board of directors,
Tavari Taylor-Brown, Program Coordinator- Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Fayette,
Bob Cover- Clothes Less Traveled board of directors and
Debbie Britt, Director Community and Public Relations-Piedmont Fayette Hospital.
Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Fayette Hospital is the recipient of a $35,000 grant from Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop, Inc. The grant will provide general operating support for Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Fayette, which offers free services and programs to anyone affected by cancer at any phase in his or her cancer journey, regardless of whether or not they are a Piedmont patient.

“We are humbled by the decision to award Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Fayette this generous grant,” said Michael Burnett, chief administrative officer at Piedmont Fayette. “Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop is a staple in our community and we sincerely thank them for all the support they have provided local charities like Cancer Wellness at Piedmont throughout the years.”

Founded in 1997, Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop, Inc. has donated more than $2.4 million to Fayette County charities. This year, it is projected to donate in excess of $500,000 to support the local non-profit community.

Since opening in 2010, Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Fayette has helped more than 800 cancer patients and their families. Professionally-led programs offered free to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers include education, relaxation and stress reduction, movement and exercise, expressive arts, meditation, support groups, individual nutritional and psychological counseling, cooking demos and social events.

“We are very pleased to provide support to Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Fayette and help those it serves in our community who deal with the effects of a cancer diagnosis in their lives,” said Wendy Binfield, grants coordinator at Clothes Less Traveled. “Our organization has received great support from the community allowing us to show our appreciation in return by providing support to impactful programs like this one.”

Clothes Less Traveled accepts gently used clothing and household items, and then sells the donated items in a retail shop. Collections have increased over time, causing the store to expand numerous times over the last decade. Revenue generated goes directly back to local charities through the Clothes Less Traveled grants program.

According to Georgia Comprehensive Cancer registry, Fayette County has a slightly higher incidence rate of cancer than the rest of the state – 489 cases per 100,000 people – making the impact of this grant even greater.

As a not-for-profit hospital, Piedmont Fayette relies on the generosity of others like Clothes Less Traveled in order to offer many programs and advanced medical technology to the community. For more information about Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Fayette Hospital, visit

Clothes Less Traveled Scholarship Program Application Deadline April 15

Each spring the Clothes Less Traveled is able to provide multiple college scholarships with a maximum one-time value up to $5,000. to graduating high school seniors from public, private or home schools within the local area. This program is another win-win situation at Clothes Less Traveled! Outstanding local students with a commitment to community service are able to receive well-deserved financial assistance for their college education. Through the Scholarship Program students have an added incentive to "give back" to their community and in doing so, many begin a life-long appreciation of what it means to be a volunteer while Clothes Less Traveled gains excellent student volunteer help each year.

Applicants to the CLT Scholarship program are excellent students and must have completed a minimum number of volunteer service hours to Clothes Less Traveled as well as demonstrated a commitment to community service. Applications and information on the program are available on the Clothes Less Traveled website and at area high schools during the fall and winter of each year. The application process involves completing the application form along with submission of an official transcript, an SAT or ACT report, a letter of recommendation and also the completion of an essay. Applications along with the required attachments are due during April. Scholarships are awarded mainly based on academic merit with some consideration of financial need demonstrated through the essay. Selection is completed by a scholarship review committee in April and scholarships are awarded by a Clothes Less Traveled representative at the scholar's high school awards banquet in May.

We thank our Clothes Less Traveled volunteers for the making possible these financial awards, and thus the many opportunities of a college education afforded to students by the Scholarship Program at CLT. Thank you, volunteers!

HUGE Store-wide Three (3) Day Sale!

Every year we hold two huge store-wide sales, one in the first quarter, then one around the September time-frame. We're clearing out the season's inventory so we can put out all new "stuff".

This year we're doing our Winter to Spring/Summer change-over sale even bigger and better! We're giving you THREE days of shopping. We're even tossing in a Thursday, which means you can shop until 7 pm the very first day of the sale!

The sale will be February 21, 22 and 23. That's Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We promise, there will still be lots of great things left on Saturday for those of you who can't shop the first two days!

Everything in the store will be 50% off with the exception of yellow-ticket items. That means you have over 20,000 square feet of crafts, clothes, furniture, electronics, books, toys and more to go through. Our prices are low already so half-off means you are really getting a super bargain.

As you can see from the photos we have a wide, wide assortment of items that might grab your attention. You can furnish your great room or living room, complete with a vintage piano!

Isn't that Ethan Allen chair wonderful? The couches & chairs on the right are just a tiny sampling of the furniture in the store. We have shelves, TV hutches, dressers, tables and so much more. No telling what will be sitting in the furniture section by the time the sale rolls around!

Cool shelves!

tv-shelvesWe just set up a brand new Pinterest page! So far, one re-pin but we'll be on there regularly starting soon. We'll be using our blog to post cool items that can be re-purposed, fixed up, or kind of cool. We're "ClothesLessTrav" on there if you'd like to find us.

We'll be posting the shelves on the left on there shortly (second pin!). It's made to hold one of the older, bulkier TVs but that back piece can be cut off to make a "regular" set of shelves. It's wide enough to put a 30+ inch TV in the large space. Wouldn't it be nice with a pop of color on the front edges?

We're thinking about holding some classes or workshops at CLT to learn how to do some of the neat things that are shared on Pinterest, or maybe just some of the ways to repair items, etc. What do you think? Interested?

Missing John!

Once again some of the staff and volunteers from the store traveled to South Carolina to visit one of our favorite volunteers, John (seated in picture). He had some medical issues recently and sadly had to leave us to be closer to his family. We miss him!

John has been a regular volunteer for a long, long time. He was the "go to" guy when it came to almost everything to do with the store. There wasn't a job he wouldn't do if asked. If the store was open John was pretty much there... he knew what kind of food everyone liked, knew where all the goodies were stashed --- and he cared deeply, and still cares deeply, about everything CLT.

John is doing well. He appreciates all of our cards, good wishes, and visits! Keep him in your prayers.

Joyce Larson and Cindy Olander: January Above and Beyond winners!

Each month we choose one (or sometimes two) wonderful volunteers to be our "Above and Beyond" winners. They get some extra small perks, a lot of appreciation, maybe a hug or two and they get to choose a charity at the end of the year to receive a small grant in their name.

Joyce Larson and Cindy Olander are our January awardees.

Joyce and Cindy originally met at World’s Gym during a water aerobics class where they discovered they had a lot in common. They both were retired elementary school teachers who enjoyed swimming, volunteering and making new friends. Joyce had recently begun volunteering at CLT and shared with Cindy how much she had enjoyed her experience. Within a few weeks, Cindy signed up to volunteer at CLT and a friendship blossomed between these two very special ladies. They began volunteering on Wednesday and after finding two identical shirts in the fall seasonal wear at CLT decided they would start dressing during their volunteer time as twins. They have continued to shop for identical shirts to wear throughout the year and have had fun sharing this experience with staff and customers.

They have nicknamed themselves Trouble 1 and Trouble 2 which harkens back to their teaching days and their love for Dr. Seuss. Both Joyce and Cindy, expressed how volunteering at CLT has given them an opportunity to have give back to the community while making friends and having a lot of fun along the way. They enjoy volunteering at CLT because the “everyone is so friendly and helpful. Our efforts as volunteers are recognized and appreciated by the staff.

We have a lot of fun being able to joke around and have fun.” They have been volunteering for the past 9 months and have heard many positive comments from customers regarding how well the store is organized and how everyone goes out of their way to be helpful. Their matching shirts have been a fun addition to their volunteer time. Customers, other volunteers and staff look forward to seeing what these two creative ladies wear each time they come to volunteer.

Joyce  has been married to Scott for 37 years. She has two daughters-Sarah, 23, and Leslie, 27. She taught elementary school for 37 years and is now retired and is enjoying travelling, swimming and building puzzles.
Cindy has been married for 32 years to Ken. She has two children-Sarah 29, Jonathan 28, who is married to Lauren and has a grand dog-Sadie. Cindy taught third grade for 25 years. She is also retired and enjoys swimming, walking and being with friends. Her greatest joy comes from being with family.

Thank you to these two special ladies who have brought their generous spirits and their fun, matching shirts to CLT! We all look forward to see what they wear next!

She loves our prices!

emily-shopperWe caught up with Emily, one of our regular shoppers, in the Valentine's section. She was looking for cards and decor for her children to pass out at school.

Although she was looking for Valentine's items she had to look around and found party supplies for her son's pirate third birthday! She found brand new pirate balloons and maps. She told us she really likes our new party section because merchandise is easily displayed.

Like many of you, her favorite thing about CLT is the prices! She said her favorite find was a vintage toy for one of her three children called "Turn and Learn".
