Von Woods Recipient of December Above and Beyone!

Our December Above and Beyond Recipient is Von Woods.

Von was born in Athens, Georgia and went to the University of Georgia. He is a diehard Bulldog fan. Von was in the ROTC program, majored in physics and entered the Air Force after college. He was a meteorologist for 35 years. He spent 5 years in the military and 30 years with the National Weather Service.

Von saw his wife Sandra at UGA at a dance and they corresponded for a year. Sandra was home on leave and they ended up marrying a year later. They have a son who graduated from Georgia Tech; he works for the University and lives in Atlanta.

Von spends his free time doing a lot of work with missions, which has taken him all over the world. He enjoys gardening, biking, hunting and fishing.

Von's philosophy of “paying it forward” and giving back to the community brought him to CLT three years ago. He works in the electronics department and very much enjoys working with the staff and other volunteers. Von helped build our Christmas trees this year, which added a lot of sparkle to the Christmas shop.

Thank you Von for sharing your kind heart and loving spirit  with CLT.

Helping the MOMS Club help others

Your donations and shopping dollars are helping to renovate the Church Street Park in historic downtown Fayetteville. The park is in a state of disrepair and the city has no funds available for its improvement. The MOMS Club of Fayetteville, a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization, has taken on this large scale service project and has been hard at work to make it happen. Their aim is to create an ADA compliant neighborhood gathering place where all members of the community can enjoy the outdoors at an accessible, family-centered park with a variety of playground equipment.

We are happy to be able to help with a $5,000 donation for the project. They plan to install swing sets, a toddler friendly area, a multi-use play structure, improve the basketball court, add picnic tables and trash receptacles and improve parking and accessibility.

The MOMS Club of Fayetteville was established in 1998. They have been active in the community ever since, performing service projects to include cleaning up local parks, visiting residents at Azalea Estates and Dogwood Forest, raising money for local charities, supporting local fire stations and other projects.

You never know what you'll find...

I stopped by the store to make a donation yesterday. Of course, I had to walk through the store to shop! First I visited the rug section that was highlighted in the weekly newsletter. There were some beautiful rugs, all sizes, colors, patterns... and they were NEW! Very reasonably priced. I had to come home and measure my rug spot and am hoping the rug I wanted, which will fit, will be there when I stop back by the store.

After checking out the rugs I wandered up to the section up front where holiday items and specials are highlighted. I discovered a ton of VHS movies on sale for 50 cents each. All the kids in my family love my movie selection... I have plenty of DVDs, but they seem to prefer the older VHS movies. I love it 'cause I can pick them up for next to nothing at the Clothes Less Traveled --- especially now when they're only 50 cents!

Then I scoped out the Mother's Day display. I found a beautiful book and a lovely heart for Mom. I decided to grab a basket (from CLT,  of course) and fill it with fun things for my mother. She's at an age where she has pretty much everything she wants so a basket with meaningful things might be just the ticket. I hope so!

I turned around and did a double-take when I saw a gazillion stuffed bears staring at me. OK, maybe not a gazillion, but there are a lot of bears! Bear collectors are sure to find something to take home.

Another cool grouping that I enjoyed looking at was the porcelain dolls. I had no idea there were so many in the store. What little girl (or older gal) wouldn't love to have a beautiful doll? The prices are great and the dolls are in great condition --- perfect for any collection.

Oh, almost forgot... I bought a shirt on the last-chance rack for a dollar. Yep, it was only a dollar. It's an ever-changing rack and I always take a quick peek.

Did you know...

medicalOur name may be "Clothes" Less Traveled but we have a LOT of other things that are less traveled!

Medical equipment is one of those things that can really put a dent in your bank account --- and when you need something, you truly NEED it!

We can't promise we'll always have what you need, but we certainly have quite a good ever-changing selection. Be sure to remember our medical section (near the sports section) when you need crutches or other medical items. Currently we have a hospital bed and a lift!
bird-cagesThinking about buying a bird? We have bird cages. Bet that's not something you'd think to look for at the Clothes Less Traveled.

Be the first to mention that you learned about our medical section or bird cages Wednesday (4/11/12) and we'll give you one of our nifty CLT shopping bags!

Buying something on sale is a very special feeling.  In fact, the less I pay for something, the more it is worth to me.  I have a dress that I paid so little for that I am afraid to wear it.  I could spill something on it, and then how would I replace it for that amount of money?  - Rita Rudner

Guess what's just around the corner!

mothers-dayYep, it's time to think about Mother's Day... and graduation. We have a great, and growing, selection of gifts and fun things for both occasions!

We have books, nick-knacks, cards... oh, the list is loooonnnngggg! Start at our special Mother's Day section and then wander through our other sections for some great ideas.
We also have plenty of cool clothes for your grad. Plus, we have a ton of other things that grads of all levels, from kindergarten to college, will love. Not sure what to buy? Bring your graduating tyke, teen or twenty-something in and let them shop till they drop.

There is no sweeter pleasure than to surprise a man by giving him more than he hopes for. - Charles Baudelaire

A rug for every room

Raegan with rugs Need a rug? Silly question, right? We all have a place that cries out for an accent rug. Wind your way through the shop to our rug section and take a look at our NEW rugs! Our quality rugs come in a variety of patterns and sizes.

Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing. Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love. - Mother Teresa

Have a seat...or a table...

jamie-furnitureWhen we expanded the store, we saved room for plenty of furniture. We have already filled up the space and we're crowding into other areas!

We have couches, tables, chairs, shelves, lamps,  end tables, and everything you need to furnish and decorate your home. We have a picture section, a section with tablecloths, place mats, napkins, and other related fabric items.
We have a lighting section with lamps, ceiling fans, ceiling lights, and many other accessories.

Need a TV to watch while you sit on the couch you're buying from us? We can accommodate. We even have stereo systems so you can chill out while listening to your fave tunes.

Joseph Sams School Receives Grant Funding from Clothes Less Traveled

Marie Sams, JSS Executive Director (L)
and Karen Stephens, CLT Board
The Joseph Sams School ( ), a private, non-profit organization serving students with special needs in Fayetteville, received a $15,000 grant from The Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop (CLT) throughout 2011. The funds have been used to support the school’s general operations. With the continuing economic downturn, non-profit organizations everywhere struggle to secure operational funds, and JSS is no exception. Funding from CLT has assisted the School in maintaining its full array of programs and services for children with mild to severe disabilities who range in age from birth to 22 years. Throughout 2011, JSS served over 100 children and their families through its 10-month school year program, Class-room Readiness/Tutorial Clinic, ASPIRE Afterschool Program, and 3-week summer school.

Just before Christmas, CLT awarded the School an additional $5000. JSS Executive Director Marie Sams stated, “These additional funds could not have come at a better time for our school; we are truly blessed to have such a wonderful organization as CLT in this county that supports so many worthy non-profit organizations.” Founded in l997, CLT is a non-profit, non-denominational faith-based initiative that provides grant funding to help local charities further their mission and make a difference in the community.

ABOUT THE JOSEPH SAMS SCHOOL Now in its 28th year, The Joseph Sams School, Inc. is a fully accredited, private, non-profit organization in Fayetteville, Georgia currently serving children who have mild to severe cognitive, physical or diagnosed developmental disabilities. The JSS is the only school of its kind in the metropolitan Atlanta area offering comprehensive services from birth to age 22 to such a broad range of individuals with disabilities. Fayette Youth Protection Home Awarded Grant

L - R: Chuck Powers, CLT volunteer, Karen Stephens,
CLT Board and Becky Davenport, Fayette Youth Protection
Fayette Youth Protection Homes (FYPH) recently received a $5,000 grant award from The Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop as well as a bonus check for $3,000 in honor of Heather Dognazzi and Chuck Powers. Heather is a dedicated member of the Clothes Less Traveled Board of Directors, and Chuck is a volunteer recently recognized for his Above and Beyond Service to the Clothes Less Traveled. Both Heather and Chuck selected Fayette Youth Protection Homes as their preferred charity for 2011.

Fayette Youth Protection Homes will use the grant award to cover general operating expenses. FYPH is a non-profit organization which provides shelter and support to children and youth who have been the victims of abuse, neglect or other tragic circumstances. At the Friday-Johnson Home, a residential group home located in Brooks, GA, school-age children receive protection and healing through a structured and homelike environment, counseling, and most importantly, lots of hugs. FYPH also operates a private foster parenting program and a clothing resource center known as Gracie’s Closet which provides free clothing and supplies to children living in foster care on the south side of metro Atlanta.

Established in 1997, the Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop is a non-profit organization located in Peachtree City that resells gently used clothing and household items and then disburses the profits, after expenses, to needy organizations in the community.

FYPH Executive Director Becky Davenport states, “The Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop has been such a blessing to Fayette Youth Protection Homes, and we are so grateful to volunteers like Heather and Chuck who make such a positive difference in their community.”
